Spaying or neutering are terms for a minor procedure that makes animals unable to produce offspring. This procedure can also be referred to by other terms, such as alter, sterilize or fix. Females are spayed and males are neutered. The surgeries are performed by veterinarians while the animal is under anesthesia. The animal generally has no side effects and may even be able to return home the same day. It is best to spay or neuter an animal before they have the opportunity to begin reproduction.
