ANIMAL LOVERS WANTED! We need your help! If you love animals and have a few extra hours each week, we would love to hear from you.*
Most of our needed volunteer work involves working in our clinic on Spay Days. Spay Day is when people bring in their cats or trappers bring in feral cats to be spayed or neutered. An average of 35 cats are done in one day.
Spay Days are held at Azalea Lakes Veterinary Clinic located at 15225 Jefferson Highway.
Morning check in – 7:30 to 10:30 am As people bring the cats in, we check the reservation, find the preprinted information form and fill out the rest of the form. We put down the cats color, gender (if known), ask about ear notching, and ask if the cat has ever been to a vet. We then write the cats information on tape that is put on the top of the carriers for identification. Then we carry the cat into the back room.
Vet tech assistance – 10:30 am to 1:30 pm & 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm These are two new shifts we have just added. We assist the vets and vet techs as necessary. We clean carriers and put newspapers in carriers for the cats to lie on and catch any mess that may occur. After the cats wake up from surgery, we carry the cages from recovery to the waiting room. We do laundry. We make phone calls to clients if the cat is awake and can be picked up before 5:00 pm. We checkout anyone that comes early to get their cat.
Afternoon cleaning and checkout – 4:00 to 6:30 pm The feral cats often relieve themselves in the traps. We place newspaper on the floor to catch it. We pick up dirty newspaper, sweep, mop, and clean cages. It can get pretty smelly! As people come in to get their cats, we make sure they get the right cats.
You can work as many shifts as you like. By the time you go to the clinic, may as well stay long enough to make it worth your while!
Dress comfortably, sneakers, jeans or shorts. We will give you a volunteer t-shirt on your first day.
We have bottled water and diet Lipton tea in the fridge. It's a regular fridge, so you can bring stuff if you want. No microwave, no ice, no stove. We have chips & cookies & other junk food for snacks.
